a. September 17 according to the Constitution marks the date where changes in the Constitution can be made

In commemoration of Senator Edward Moore “Ted” Kennedy

WHEREAS, It is the custom of the Student Government Council to  pay  tribute  to remarkable  and inspirational leaders whose life’s work and civic endeavors served to enhance the quality of  life  in  their  communities  and  the nation as a whole;

WHEREAS, Senator Edward Kennedy, who served in the United States Senate as Chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, was the third longest-serving member of the United States Senate in American history and played a pivotal role in the enactment of laws concerning education, immigration, cancer research, health insurance, disability discrimination, AIDS care, civil rights, mental health benefits, and volunteering;

WHEREAS, Senator Kennedy was known as the “Lion of the Senate” not only for his long tenure and influence, but also for his integral role in passing more than 300 pieces of legislation;

WHEREAS, Kennedy passed away on August 25th at his home in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts after a year-long struggle against a brain tumor;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Student Government Council at the Modesto Maidique Campus of Florida International University commemorates his actions in the United States Senate, and gives gratitude for all his dedication to the people of the United States of America.

e.       Planning on meeting with Dean; planning on meeting with organizations at Engineering campus (Hachem)

f.       Thursday October 15 is the Honors Convocation; table from 2-3pm; Wolfsonian Trip TBA (Doraiswamy)

g.      Increase security in Housing (Proenza)

h.      SPA meeting at College of Law; orientation for first year students to be mentored by older students; FIU Law Day at Tamiami Park (Rubi)

i.        Met with Dean Grossman last week; was invited to Dean retreat (Mellon)

In Commemoration of late FIU Student Myles Davis

WHEREAS, The mission statement of the Student Government Council, and its elected Senators and Members, states that we are “committed to providing and improving the overall student experience,” as well as “fostering student life, encouraging community involvement, and serving the common interest of the students,”

WHEREAS, Myles Davis served the FIU Golden Panther Band as a trumpet player and was also a member of the National Guard Army Band and studied as a jazz performance major at FIU;

WHEREAS, The Golden Panther Band is known for keeping up school spirit by attending games and other major University events such as commencement and freshman convocation and being a part of the Golden Panther band is an honor as well as an indication of commitment to the University and its students;

WHEREAS, Davis passed away on July 23 while trying to move a downed power line with his bare hands after a rainstorm, to protect his neighbors from the danger the power line could provide;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Student Government Association commemorates his heroic act, and gives gratitude for all his dedication to the Golden Panther Band and the University.
