Green Fee Referendum and Constitutional Amendments

July 10, 2010 Leave a comment

Miami, Florida (11 July 2010)–The results of the Green Energy Fee Referendum and Constitutional Amendment special election on the 30th are in! 299 members of the student body went to the polls to express their opinions about the issues at hand.

As it pertains to the Constitutional Amendments, 201 students voted in favor of the changes, while 46 student voted against the changed. Fourty-nine (49) students abstained from voting on the proposed amendments altogether.

The broad strokes of the passage of the constitutional amendments mean that the elections commission is now part of the executive branch. The judicial branch is now the Supreme Court of Student Government and justices’ terms are now extended to two years. Additionally, graduate presence in student government has increased, as two graduate senate seats are now available.

As it pertains to the Green Energy Fee Referendum, 222 students voted in favor of the institution the Green Fee, while 64 students voted against the institution of the Green Fee. Ten (10) students abstained from voting on the referendum altogether.

Now that the student body has spoken, the issue will be decided upon by the Board of Trustees at university. If the Board of Trustees approves this fee, the Board of Governors of the State University System of Florida will have the ultimate decision in the installation of the Green Energy Fee at FIU. Should the Board of Governors approve the fee, students would then vote on how much the fee will be.

Students will be charged no more than $1, but no less than $0.25,  for each credit hour enrolled in during each semester, generating in excess of $900,000 that would be allocated by a committee—with the University President and the SGC President each appointing ½ of the committee’s members—towards projects that will reduce energy costs on campuses across the state. Every three years, the student body would vote on whether to maintain, remove or decrease the amount of the Green Fee.

Student Academic Support Complex One Step Closer to Reality

July 2, 2010 Leave a comment

Miami, Florida (28 May 2010)—As part of a collective effort to secure state funding for future projects at FIU, SGC-MMC President and University Trustee Helena Ramirez along with SGC-MMC Vice President Nicholas Autiello stalwartly advocated the desires and best interests of the student body in saving the ‘Student Academic Support Complex’ from being removed from the state’s annual budget.

Upon returning from Tallahassee, President Ramirez noted, “…we are most grateful that our state legislature acknowledge FIU’s commitment to its students, and are excited that Governor Christ decided to approve the funding for the Student Support Complex…”

While the pairs’ visit to Tallahassee certainly influenced Crist’s decision, the groundwork laid by and the close working relationship between Vice President Steve Sauls, Saul’s team at the FIU Office of Governmental Relations and the Student Government Association contributed exponentially to Ramirez’s and Autiello’s success.

As the liaison between the University and the Florida legislature, the FIU Office of Governmental Relations has contributed to FIU’s growth and status as a top research institution. Vice President Sauls and his team of administrators played integral roles in securing authorization for the establishment of Law and Medical Schools and over $500 Million in state construction projects at FIU.

The Student Academic Support Complex will assist in alleviating student’s grievances relative to student services. The future 100,000 square foot complex will centralize many of the service-oriented offices on campus, unifying such administrative outlets as admissions, financial aid, enrollment information and processing, transfer services, retention, undergraduate advising, communications and account services.

In a recent student government cabinet meeting, President Ramirez noted, “…the complex will provide the University with yet another tool that it will use to engage the student body. The impact that this will have on the overall experience at FIU is incalculable…”

In addition to the $17.6 Million allocated for the Student Support Complex, $3.5 Million was allocated for a Neuroscience Center, which will facilitate the diagnosis, treatment, research and education for chronic diseases. Additionally, $1.6 Million was allocated for an Astroscience Center, an astronomy-observing platform that will expand teaching facilities.
