In Support of the Engineering Expo 2011

WHEREAS, Florida International University’s vision is to lead a student-centered urban public research university that is both locally and globally engaged;

WHEREAS, The Student Government Council at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus is committed to improving the overall student experience by fostering student life, encouraging community involvement, and embracing diversity;

WHEREAS, The Engineering Expo is an exciting and dynamic educational experience designed to engage and expose our local schools and colleges to the wonders of science and engineering;

WHEREAS, Over 150 FIU student volunteers are gathering to become tour guides, demonstrators, and teachers to the mysteries of the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields;

WHEREAS, The Engineering Student Committee promotes unity among the engineering organizations, and encourages students’ participation in activities around the University;

WHEREAS, The Engineering Expo will provide exposure to science and engineering for local public school students, encouraging them to consider careers in engineering, science, and technology professions;

WHEREAS, The Engineering Expo will take place at the Engineering Center on February 25th, 2011;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Student Government Council – Modesto A. Maidique Campus will appropriate $801.00 to the Engineering Expo for pizza and sodas for the FIU students that are volunteering at this event.

In Support of the Florida International University 2011 Solar Decathlon Team

WHEREAS, Florida International University’s vision is to lead a student-centered urban public research university that is both locally and globally engaged;

WHEREAS, the Student Government Council at Modesto A. Maidique is committed to providing and improving the overall student experience by fostering student life, encouraging community involvement, and embracing diversity;

WHEREAS, Florida International University has adopted the Worlds Ahead brand with the intentions of pushing the university and its constituents beyond what is expected by taking the opportunities given and doing something great with them;

WHEREAS, Florida International University has set in motion a Green Initiative with the hopes of instilling awareness of environmental issues and integrating practices into research, education, and communication to establish an institutional culture of sustainability;

WHEREAS, The FIU 2011 Solar Decathlon Team was one of only 20 intercollegiate student teams selected worldwide to participate in the prestigious US Department of Energy’s International Competition;

WHEREAS, Attendance at the International Builders’ Show (IBS) in Orlando, Florida on January 2011 for a mandatory Design Development Review is essential for the FIU team to enter their PerFORM[D]ance House to the U.S. Department of Energy 2011 Solar Decathlon;

WHEREAS, The project and the team present a unique opportunity for Florida International University to exhibit its contributions to the development and dissemination of sustainable technology on the most prominent of international stages, the National Mall in Washington D.C.;

WHEREAS, Not only is the Orlando IBS review session a requirement of the Department of Energy design review process, but it also provides another opportunity to showcase the accomplishments of the FIU student team;

WHEREAS,  Team FIU and its PerFORM[D]ance House will inform and excite the local and global communities about conserving our environment by stimulating critical thinking for positive changes in our society;

 

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Student Government Council – Modesto A. Maidique Campus will appropriate $1,440 to the Florida International University 2011 Solar Decathlon Team for accommodations and gas for their trip to the IBS in Orlando, Florida.

To Fund the Law School’s Digital Signage Project

WHEREAS, Student Government Association promotes overall programming that is beneficial to students in order to better represent and spread knowledge within and beyond FIU;

WHEREAS, The FIU Law School is one of the most selective law schools in America, the second most diverse, and one of the few schools with a majority-female population;

WHEREAS, The Digital Signage is a software that provides electronic display of information, advertising, and other messages;

WHEREAS, This program will increase student knowledge of events in and around campus, not just at the Law School, bringing the community of FIU students closer than ever before;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Student Government Council – Modesto A. Maidique Campus will appropriate $1,0001,950 3,250 to the Law School for the Digital Signage.

WHEREAS, “Hopes for Children of the World” is a program that brings hope tocommunities in remote areas of the world by providing suitableshelter, education, and essentials;

WHEREAS, Their vision is to impact and make a difference in less fortunatecommunities, by bringing vivid colors, in the midst of poverty anddeprivation;

WHEREAS, This program will impact the lives of students by allowing them toshare a unique experience that will make them more socially alertand humanitarian;

WHEREAS, The students in this program will be lecturing adults and children ofthe community about sustainability and nutrition, and will also berenovating the village;

WHEREAS, This project will be accomplished from December 11th to the 18th inNuevo Amanecer, Nicaragua;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Student Government Council– Modesto A. Maidique Campus will appropriate $2,000 to theorganization “Hopes for Children of the World” for airfare to Leon,Nicaragua.

WHEREAS, This trip will expose FIU students to politics in D.C., the nation’s history, and firsthand experience first hand with  of the culture of our nation’s capitaol;

WHEREAS, The program will serve as a lobbying effort on behalf of the University as FIU students are scheduled to meet with congressional staffers, an FIU lobbyist in D.C., and congressional representatives to promote FIU as a University, its mission, the program, the University sponsors, and national exposure;

WHEREAS, The event will occur from March 17-20th and will take place in Washington, D.C.;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Student Government Council –Modesto A. Maidique Campus will appropriate $1,800 to the Honors College students of the “Confronting America” course for their airfare to Washington, D.C.
