Press Release

The Student Government Council of the Modesto A. Maidique Campus at Florida International University (FIU) held its first in a series of Town Hall Meetings on Thursday, the 2nd of September 2010.

Miami, Florida (6 September 2010)—College of Engineering and Computing Senators Tara Jafarmadar and William-Jose Velez facilitated the first in a series of Town Hall Meetings at the Engineering Center. The event provided a safe and comfortable opportunity for Engineering and Computing students to voice their issues and concerns with College of Engineering and Computing Dean Amir Mirmiran SGC-MMC engineering and Computing Senators Velez and Jafarmadar, and SGC-MMC President and University Trustee Helena Ramirez.

“Students and Faculty members alike,” mentions Senator Jafarmadar, “made an effort to not only attend the event, but came prepared to discuss with their elected student government officials and University administration their desires and concerns as it pertains to the Engineering Center.”

“The issues and concerns raised at the Town Hall,” affirms Senator Jafarmadar, “provides myself and Senator Velez with a definitive direction in terms of the types of events, and activities that our constituents would like for us to facilitate, and further the type and variation of student advocacy that we should pursue as Senators.”

In a surprise appearance, University President Mark B. Rosenberg reaffirmed his commitment to the development and advancement of the College of Engineering and Computing, noting, “I want more improvement, even more than what through your great work has been achieved already” stated Rosenberg during the town hall meeting.”

“President Rosenberg’s attendance at the Town Hall Meeting,” notes Senator Velez, “is a reaffirmation of the university’s commitment to the student body.” “This commitment is even further affirmed,” continues Senator Velez, “by the university’s steadfastness and support of the improvements to the Engineering Center.”

“SGC-MMC is proud” discusses Senator Velez,  “to be a part of these improvements, appropriating in excess of $6,000 in funding towards a student lounge at the Engineering Center. This lounge will serve as a space for students to study and otherwise congregate. More importantly, this lounge will provide a central meeting hub for engineering and computing students. Previous to this, there was no one particular space that we were proud to call our own. Because of the efforts of the university administration and SGC-MMC, that has changed.”

This town hall meeting was the first in a series of meetings to be facilitated by Senators with the objective of engaging their respective constituencies. Senator Velez, who is also the SGC-MMC Senate Speaker, expressed his satisfaction at continuing the practice of Town Hall meetings, which began last year under the tenure of then Senate Speaker Helena Ramirez. The dates of future Town Hall Meetings will be announced at a later time.

The Town Hall Meetings provide a unique opportunity for students to voice their desires and concerns to their respective college administrators and elected student representatives. For more information about the town hall meetings, please send an email to sga@fiu.edu, or visit SGC-MMC’s office in Graham Center, Room 211.
