Committee: Rules, Legislative, and Judiciary Committee Sponsors: Hector Mujica, College of Business Senator; Tara Jafarmadar, Engineering and Computer Sciences Senator; Cristina Loreto, Senator At-Large; Jesus Borrero, College of Arts and Sciences Senator.

In Support of the Prioritizing Campus Safety at FIU

WHEREAS, The purpose of the Student Government Association is to foster student life, embrace global diversity, as well as represent and address students’ needs at the community, state, federal, and international level;

WHEREAS, Campus safety is one of the main concerns faced by students at many universities;

WHEREAS, The presence of a well equipped, well funded, and well established University Police Department is vital for the safety of the students of Florida International University;

WHEREAS, Concerns have risen regarding the efficiency and adequacy of funding of the FIU University Police Department, particularly in regards to the communications equipment needed to protect students on campus;

WHEREAS, The Miami-Dade Police Union President John Rivera made a public statement on March 2010 regarding the condition of the communications equipment used by the University Police Department stating that “this is a public safety issue, the students are not safe;”

WHEREAS, The University Police Department currently uses the Motorola 1250 LS Series, which is now a discontinued model, recommended for industries like entertainment and construction. The model does not have a lockout feature which allows officers to talk over each other causing confusion;

WHEREAS, The Police Benevolent Association of Miami-Dade County launched a public advertisement campaign in April 2010 on the Beacon calling the matter into attention to the University community;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, The Student Government Association at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus encourages the administration at Florida International University to continue to make campus safety a top priority and assure that the Florida International University University Police Department receives adequate funding and resources to keep the students safe.

In Support of a Coffee Commercial Establishment at the Engineering Center

WHEREAS, The purpose of the Student Government Association is to promote the interests of the student body, ensuring that concerns and issues are addressed;

WHEREAS, The Engineering Center is the main study facility for nearly four thousand students of Florida International University’s College of Engineering and Computing;

WHEREAS, The Engineering Center currently lacks any alternative food establishment besides the main facility of La Focaccia;

WHEREAS, Students and the Office of the Dean of the CEC seek and desire to have a commercial coffee establishment at the EC, following the models of the establishments available at the main campus of FIU;

WHEREAS, Such a commercial establishment will improve and maximize the use of the soon to be renovated building lobby of the Engineering Center;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Student Government Council – Modesto A. Maidique Campus strongly supports the establishment of a coffee commercial establishment at the Engineering Center of Florida International University;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the SGC-MMC encourages the FIU Office of Business Services to do everything within its reach to make this request from students a reality to improve the Campus Life at the Engineering Center.

Special Senate Meeting on May 24, 2010

The Speaker of the Senate has called for a special Senate meeting this next May 24, 2010, as was indicated to the Senate. The meeting will be from 4:00pm to 6:00pm in GC 150 – the Student Government Council Chambers.

Student Government meetings are open to the public. Qualified individuals with a disability requesting an accommodation to attend this meeting must make the request no less than five working days in advance by calling 305-348-2121 TTY via FRS 1-800-955-8771.

In Support of the Establishment of Student Faculty Apprenticeship Initiative

WHEREAS, The purpose of the Student Government Association is to evaluate and establish student programs and services, while promoting the betterment of educational standards, facilities and services;
WHEREAS, There is a need for a central venue for students to access information regarding research projects and internships, between students and faculty;
WHEREAS, Through the use of technology and collaboration, an efficient program can be created that would allow students to connect with professors engaging in research projects, and who have internships available, providing students with vital experience for the workforce;
WHEREAS, Programs like these would be in perfect harmony with Florida International University’s mission to provide quality learning, state-of-the-art research and creative activity, and problem-solving engagement;
WHEREAS, This program would engage FIU’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) of Global Learning for Global Citizenship by allowing students to partake in internships, fellowships, and research projects that develop global awareness, a global perspective, and an attitude of global engagement;
WHEREAS, As a university that is “Worlds Ahead” in its commitment to learning, research, entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity, FIU would immensely benefit from the Student Faculty Apprenticeship Initiative, as a program born out of the initiative and creativity of students, to engage in research and learning;
WHEREAS, FIU’s Office of Career Services has pledged their support towards this initiative, and is committed to providing resources that better develop FIU students for the real world;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Student Government Council – Modesto A. Maidique Campus supports the creation and establishment of the Student Faculty Apprenticeship Initiative and pledges to provide the resources and work in coordination with the Office of Career Services for the successful implementation of the program.
