Press Release: Faculty, Staff and Administration Appreciation Initiative

Press Release

The Student Government Council of the Modesto A. Maidique Campus at Florida International University (FIU) announces its Faculty, Staff and Administration Appreciation Initiative, a yearlong effort to recognize members of the University community for their contribution to the success of FIU.

Miami, Florida (6 September 2010)—SGC-MMC President and University Trustee Helena Ramirez expressed excitement and anticipation for the inception of SGC-MMC’s newest initiative, the “Faculty, Staff and Administration Appreciation Initiative.” The aim of this initiative will be to not only celebrate the professional accomplishments of members of faculty, staff and administration of the university, but to extend them a token of appreciation for their commitment and contribution to the success of this great institution.

When questioned about how members of faculty, staff and administration were selected for recognition, Assistant Director of Campus Life and SGC-MMC Faculty Advisor Jose Toscano mentions “in the planning phase of this initiative, it was rather difficult to set selection criterion. After considering the university’s progress since its inception, the planning committee decided that it would be best to spotlight members of faculty, staff and administration who have served in whatever capacity at FIU for at least twenty (20) years or more.”

“After meeting with Human Resources to discuss the initiative,” mentions SGC-MMC Press Secretary Dean Gabriel Williams, “I wasn’t aware that so many members of our faculty, staff and administration had served such an extensive tenure with the university.” “The objective of this initiative,” continues Press Secretary Williams “is two fold in the sense that it will serve as a means to commend members of the university community for their service, as well as to inform and educate the student body of the level of dedication of university faculty, staff and administration.”

The Faculty, Staff and Administration Appreciation Initiative stems loosely from the “Did You Know?” Initiative, a bi-weekly pictorial lesson of FIU’s history, can be found at http://www2.fiu.edu/~sga/DidYouKnow.html. The initiative is set to launch on the 25th of October, as 22 members of FIU’s faculty, staff and administrative will be featured at http://www2.fiu.edu/~sga/FacultyAppreciation.
