Resolution: To urge FIU and Aramark to take action against Human Trafficking

To urge FIU and Aramark to take action against Human Trafficking

WHEREAS, the Student Government Association’s purpose is to ensure that students concerns are addressed in the immediate governance and policy development of Florida International University at all levels, providing an official voice and action on behalf of the student body;

WHEREAS, according to Florida International University’s Institutional Values Statement, FIU is committed to respect for the dignity of the individual, honesty, integrity, and truth;

WHEREAS, Aramark is the main food service provider on Florida International University;

WHEREAS, Aramark is a major consumer of goods supplied by W&D Apparel, a Taiwan-based manufacturing firm conducting operations in Jordan;

WHEREAS, W&D Apparel operates in the Jordanian Qualifying Industrial Zone, which has been highlighted in the 2008 Trafficking in Persons Report issued by the United States State Department for engaging in worker abuse and forced labor;

WHEREAS, Since September 2007, W&D Apparel has recruited hundreds of workers from Vietnam and subjected them to human rights abuses such as 16-hour workdays, misrepresented wage compensation, confiscation of workers’ passports, and severe beatings and maltreatment by both W&D staff and local authorities;

WHEREAS, W&D Apparel continues to practice a policy of human trafficking and labor exploitation between Vietnam and Jordan while distributing its products from this facility to major US corporations, including Aramark;

WHEREAS, Florida International University students stand in opposition to Aramark’s association with corporations that engage in labor exploitation and human trafficking, and are joined in opposition by campuses across the nation, including the University of Florida, and Georgetown University;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Student Government Council – Modesto A. Maidique Campus Senate urges university officials to pressure Aramark to advocate that W&D Apparel end their immoral business practices to remain true to the Florida International University’s values of respect for the dignity of the individual, honesty, integrity, and truth.
